What's "MOGO"? Humane education encompasses a philosophy and pedagogy centered on the value of education as an underlying system, that if tweaked slightly, has the potential for massive, positive, sustainable change. Humane educators teach compassion, critical and systems thinking, and creativity to solve complex issues. A solutionary is a person who the ability to think and analyze issues critically while cultivating solutions that are the most beneficial, just, and sustainable for the planet and its inhabitants. Humane educators and solutionaries consider the ripple effect of their actions, striving for solutions that do the Most Good and Least Harmful (MOGO) to people, animals, and the environment. |
A humane educator is not necessarily a teacher. There are countless solutionary-type efforts that exist currently in the world, and many who already hold the characteristics of a humane educator or solutionary, without even knowing it. Humane education programs such as those currently offered at the Institute for Humane Education (IHE) and universities have been introduced in a structured way to guide global citizens of all ages and abilities toward sustainable, just, and equitable practices that benefit all.
Core competencies of humane education revolve around real-world topics through critical-, systems-, and creative thinking:
